Real Bay Area properties, real problems, real results. Every property we protect has a story that started with a specific problem — recurring break-ins, an outgoing security vendor, a fire marshal deadline, a tenant complaint spiral. Below are two client wins that illustrate how Surefire Security approaches each engagement: a diagnostic first, a customized deployment second, and measurable results third. California PPO 121780. Alameda Self-Storage Facility: Recurring Burglaries Eliminated in Year One
The Situation
A multi-building self-storage facility in Alameda was experiencing constant break-ins before contracting with Surefire Security. Self-storage is one of the highest-risk commercial property types in the Bay Area — units are unattended, contents are unknown to the operator, and criminals know that a single successful break-in often exposes dozens of units in a night. The property was losing tenant trust, absorbing repair costs on damaged units and fencing, and starting to see the reputational damage show up in online reviews.
What Surefire Deployed
- Smart-scheduled proactive patrolling. Rather than a fixed guard post that criminals can time around, we deployed a randomized patrol schedule with variable timing — no predictable gap for a would-be intruder to exploit.
- Uniformed officers on foot patrol at high-risk hours (evening through overnight), covering every building, drive aisle, and fence line at irregular intervals.
- Marked patrol vehicle with lights on all night — a highly visible visual deterrent that signals to anyone casing the property that security is active, mobile, and unpredictable. Criminals almost universally pass on properties with visible active patrol vehicles in favor of easier targets.
- Documented patrol logs with timestamps for every round, available to the property owner and their insurance carrier on request.
The Result
Burglaries completely stopped. In the 12 months since Surefire started coverage, the facility has recorded zero successful break-ins — a full reversal from the recurring pattern that preceded our engagement. The property owner has renewed our contract into a second year, and the visible deterrence approach has also reduced attempted trespass, loitering, and after-hours drive-throughs. The insurance carrier’s risk classification for the property improved on their annual review.
The Lesson
Security for self-storage isn’t about having a guard sitting in a shack — it’s about being visibly, unpredictably present. A marked patrol vehicle with lights on, moving through the property at random intervals, creates the same deterrent effect as a much larger fixed guard force at a fraction of the cost. This is the model we deploy for warehouse, industrial, and self-storage properties across the Bay Area. See our warehouse security program and vehicle patrol services for full details.
Hayward Motel: Better Security + Lower Cost After Vendor Switch (3-Year Client)
The Situation
A Hayward motel operator approached Surefire Security three years ago with two objectives that most security buyers assume are mutually exclusive: reduce security spend and simultaneously improve service quality. Their previous vendor was charging premium rates for a coverage plan that wasn’t matched to the property’s actual risk profile, and staff and guests were experiencing security issues the previous vendor wasn’t equipped to prevent or de-escalate.
Hospitality properties — motels, hotels, extended-stay — have security needs that generic guard companies typically miss. Staff need protection during late-night check-ins and cash handling. Guests need to feel safe walking to their rooms after dark. Non-guests can’t be allowed to loiter in parking areas or common spaces. The right security presence has to be visible enough to deter, but professional enough not to make paying guests uncomfortable.
What Surefire Deployed
- Property walk-through and threat assessment before quoting anything — we mapped high-risk hours, staff pain points, guest complaint patterns, and property vulnerabilities.
- Right-sized coverage plan. Instead of the previous vendor’s blanket 24/7 armed model, we designed coverage matched to actual risk — heavy presence during check-in and late-night hours, lighter coverage during low-risk daytime windows.
- BSIS-certified officers trained in hospitality service posture — visible to deter, professional enough to interact politely with guests, trained to de-escalate rather than confront.
- Guest-facing presence at the front desk area during late check-in windows, plus proactive parking lot patrols.
- Incident reporting workflow designed to flow directly to motel management by end of each shift — no more surprises the next morning.
The Result
Both objectives delivered: the motel received measurably better security coverage — staff felt safer, guest complaints about parking-lot loitering dropped, and there have been zero significant incidents since Surefire took over — while paying materially less than they had been paying their previous vendor. Three years later, they’re still with us. They renew every year because the numbers work and the service quality holds. That kind of retention doesn’t happen with generic guard companies.
The Lesson
Security spend isn’t linear with security outcomes. A vendor charging you more isn’t necessarily giving you more — often they’re just charging premium rates for a coverage plan that isn’t matched to your actual risk. A property walk-through and honest risk assessment can often identify a coverage model that costs less than what you’re paying today and delivers better outcomes. This is why we offer a free property walk-through and security assessment before any contract — see our hotel security program for the full hospitality approach.
The Pattern Behind Both Wins
Both of these client stories share the same underlying approach:
- Diagnose first, quote second. Every Surefire engagement starts with a physical property walk-through and threat assessment. We don’t quote from a template.
- Customize the coverage plan to the property’s actual risk profile — not to a spreadsheet minimum, and not to a maximum the client can afford. The right amount, at the right hours, in the right posture.
- Document everything. Patrol logs, incident reports, monthly summaries. If our client ever needs to prove coverage to an insurance carrier, ownership group, or fire marshal, the documentation exists.
- Renew on service, not lock-in. Both clients above are on year 1 (storage) and year 3 (motel). They stay because it works. Every Surefire contract has a 30-day cancellation clause — we win renewals on quality.
